“The worst and the stupidest”
It’s not unintentional. It was never unintentional. I refer to the seething box of putrid hate that is Donald Trump’s mouth. From the beginning, when he took that dreadful escalator ride to announce his Presidency, Donald Trump’s desire has been not to attract the best and the brightest, but the worst and the stupidest.
And so he did. Every lowdown-dirty, racist creature around had found their new leader, and it was HIM. And it all started with: “When Mexico sends…..” I will not repeat the rest.
Call it a dog whistle. We’ve been calling it that for years. Now he’s up to his old tricks again. Trump, the other night, doubled down on his “poisoning the blood” comment. It happened in Iowa. It was such a shock — not.
It was not a shock. Trump is in so much trouble. Indictments, and trials, and lawyers. I suspect he wanted to do something to throw out a jolly little reminder to his racist ghouls who still love him: I’m still here.
Only he’s not. Trump’s mind is gone. He can see forever — and ever — courtrooms and prison cells. He’s friendless and nothing more than a bad joke. He wants to get his name back out there, and he wants to motivate his racist troll buddies (remember why you voted for me.)
The problem? There aren’t enough of them this time. See, this garbage that tumbles from Trump’s mouth WILL remind people, Only some of that reminding will be to independent and moderate republican voters who will instantly recall how much they hate him.
I listened to Trump’s voice the other night as he tried to dehumanize innocent people. Want to know what I heard in his voice? I heard a note of silken satisfaction. Few Republicans have come out against this hate speech. Susan Collins has said she is concerned. (That is not a joke.) But by and large, most Republicans have either defended him or said nothing. And they will pay the price, at the ballot box and the way they are remembered in history.
It was intentional. It was never unintentional. When Trump says these things, it’s because he is virtue signaling, he is signaling to the worst among us. So we must signal to the BEST among us. As long as the best among us call it out when it happens, we can be assured that MOST — not all, but most — of the American people are on our side.
