One of the reasons the Democratic Party fared poorly in House races in New York State in 2022 was that the map was gerrymandered in favor of the Republicans to begin with. The Democrats were forced to fight battles stacked against them on too many fronts. But now those battles are about to get unstacked.
The courts ruled on Tuesday that New York’s congressional maps must be redrawn to be more fair prior to the 2024 election. The resulting maps could shift perhaps three to four House seats in the Democrats’ favor in 2024. Given the current math, this alone could decide the House majority.
That said, competitive elections don’t win themselves. Once the dust settles in New York (and some other litigated states) and we see what the competitive House races are, we’ll need to dive in with donations, volunteering, phone banking, retweeting, and all the other tools we have.
In the meantime, one House race that will be competitive is the special election to replace George Santos in New York’s 3rd District. That election is in February – just two months away – and while the Democrats will have a slight advantage, it will be a close race. We need to get behind Democratic nominee Tom Suozzi right now.
