The real problem with Donald Trump’s worsening senility

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

It’s happened again. I’ve gotten yet another batch of panicked emails from people begging me to stop talking about Donald Trump’s worsening senility, because they’re certain it’ll get him off the legal hook.

I never even know how to respond to such emails. First, the law doesn’t work that way. No one magically avoids prison simply for being senile. More importantly, if Trump becomes widely seen as senile, then he’ll (obviously) be finished politically. So if you’re rooting for Trump’s downfall, you should absolutely want everyone talking about Trump’s worsening senility.

Our side’s inability to understand that Trump’s senility is bad for him, is a far larger problem than just the unnecessary clogging of my inbox. I think it’s why we don’t hear about it from the media. Last Monday the New York Times and MSNBC both ran big headlines about Trump’s worsening senility, and I was hoping it meant we were finally about to have the national conversation that we need to have.

But by Tuesday those headlines about Trump’s senility were gone. When the media introduces a long overdue topic like this in such a big and well timed way, and then it completely disappears by the next day, it’s because the media didn’t get the ratings it was hoping for out of that topic. Or rather, MSNBC and the New York Times probably got the same stupid panicked hysteria in their inboxes last Monday that I’ve been getting for as long as I’ve been covering Trump’s worsening senility. And, given that all they care about is ratings, they decided it’s just not worth taking that much heat from such a frantic segment of their audience.

But Donald Trump’s senility is probably the biggest story out there right now. It’s even bigger than his criminal trials. He isn’t going to prison until next year. His senility is a right now thing. It makes him politically non-viable today, not next year. All it’ll take is for the mainstream media to start talking about Trump’s senility on a daily basis, and even his primary polling numbers will crater to the point that he only has his own too-small base left (which for the record is about one-third of all Republican primary voters).

The biggest obstacle to getting the media to start spending every day talking about Trump’s senility is to get the doofuses on our side to stop trying to shush the media whenever it brings up the topic. We need to get these folks to understand that Trump’s senility is not going to magically keep him out of prison. And we need to push the major media outlets to talk about Trump’s senility with such force that it outweighs the nervous nellie nonsense they’re getting from the doofuses who don’t want anyone to talk about it.
