Not looking good for Jim Jordan in the third round either
After Jim Jordan lost the first round of voting for Speaker of the House, various House Republicans told the media that they expected him to gain a handful of new votes but lose even more votes in the process. Sure enough, after 20 House Republicans voted against him in the first round, 22 House Republicans voted against him in the second round.
Now Jim Jordan has announced that he’s staying in the race for a third round. But House Republicans are already telling the media that they expect even more of Jordan’s “yes” votes to become “no” votes in the third round. It’s possible he might gain a few votes as well, but this would still put him nowhere near becoming Speaker.
So it may now be a question of how many rounds Jim Jordan wants to keep insisting on losing. Kevin McCarthy did lose fourteen rounds before finally winning, but that was mostly about getting just one group – the Gaetz faction – to fall in line. Jordan’s House Republican dissenters are from all political walks of life, meaning there’s no single angle he can take for winning them all over.
In any case, today has been utterly humiliating for Jim Jordan so far, and now he’s decided that he wants to taste even more of that humiliation with a likely third round loss.
