George Santos goes nuclear, vows to take Steve Scalise down with him
House Republicans have picked Steve Scalise as their nominee for Speaker, but they don’t have the votes to elect him (or anyone else). That means every vote matters – including George Santos, who is currently out on bail while awaiting criminal trial.
The thing is, Scalise seems to be trying to find the votes without needing to taint himself by courting Santos’ vote. But Santos is now lashing out at Scalise for refusing to court him. Santos tweeted this:
It’s just past 9:40pm and I have yet to hear from the Speaker-Designate. So I’ve made my decision and after 10 months and having had 0 contact or outreach from him, I’ve come to the conclusion that my VOTE doesn’t matter to him.
I’m now declaring I’m an ANYONE but Scalise and come hell or high water I won’t change my mind.
We need a Speaker that leads by including every single member of the team not just some, That’s not leadership!
So there you have it. George Santos is now trying to trying to take Scalise down with him. The kicker is that if Scalise does manage to get elected Speaker in spite of Santos’ sabotage, Scalise’s first order of business could be to expel Santos. This is all fluid and unpredictable, but suffice it to say that Santos isn’t helping himself. At all.
