Jack Smith fires back at Donald Trump
When Judge Aileen Cannon temporarily paused the proceedings last week in order to consider Donald Trump’s request to indefinitely delay his criminal trial, it was widely misreported as Cannon having indefinitely delayed the trial. It set off yet another round of doomsday hysteria online about how Trump is “getting away with it all.”
But back in the real world, Jack Smith has filed a response to Trump’s request, picking it to pieces and pointing out that Trump’s request has no legal basis whatsoever. If Cannon feels compelled to side with Smith on this, then the trial will still be on track to take place in the exact same timeframe that it was always scheduled to happen.
It’s always possible that Cannon will side with Trump on this. But in spite of the endless chanting about how “Cannon keeps siding with Trump,” that’s actually not true. Up to this point Cannon has shown that she’s not inclined to let Trump push the trial past the election. If she were to rule in favor of Trump’s latest motion, it would represent a change in her view on the matter.
As always, there’s the dishonestly negative manner in which the media misreports these kinds of things, then there’s the cartoonish manner in which everyone melts down online about it in a fit of doomsday hysteria, and then there’s the real world. In the real world, Trump’s trial has ABSOLUTELY NOT been delayed. And Jack Smith is working to keep it that way.
