Donald Trump’s incoherent new tweet about the Alabama election is just plain scary

Earlier this week, Donald Trump’s preferred primary candidate Luther Strange ended up losing badly in the U.S Senate special election. It was a humiliating moment for Trump, after he’d gone out of his way to throw his leverage behind Strange, only to have it turn out that he has no remaining leverage. Now Trump is inexplicably revisiting his Alabama loss, bragging about how well it went for him, and going so incoherently off the mark that he ultimately had to delete it.

After Trump had spent the day posting eighteen rambling angry tweets about Puerto Rico and one about the NFL, he finally decided to bring up Alabama. He tweeted “In analyzing the Alabama Primary race,FAKE NEWS always fails to mention that the candidate I endorsed went up MANY points after Election!” There were a number of problems here, not the least of which is that a candidate can’t go up in the polls after an election.

Trump quickly deleted the tweet, replacing it with “In analyzing the Alabama Primary race,FAKE NEWS always fails to mention that the candidate I endorsed went up MANY points after endorsement!” So that’s probably what he meant to say the first time around. This was still a mess, however. There was very little polling in the race prior to Trump’s endorsement in mid-August. What is clear, based on numbers from RealClearPolitics, is that Trump’s flurry of tweets and campaign rally appearance in mid to late September did nothing to help Strange’s position in the polls. Trump’s claim that his endorsement helped Strange is nonsense.

The bigger concern here, however, is that Donald Trump is still talking about this debacle nearly a week later – and he’s only worried about it’s made him look. Republican nominee Roy Moore is now facing a tough fight from upstart Democratic nominee Doug Jones, who is trying to pull off an upset with the backing of a number of key Democratic Party figures. Instead of tweeting about that, Trump is rather scarily still focused on Strange’s loss to Moore. At this point he’s the only who still gives a damn about it.
