Donald Trump rolled out of bed at his golf resort in New Jersey this morning and decided to launch a series of vicious attacks on the people of Puerto Rico and the mayor of its capital city. Suffice it to say that the attacks did not go over well with the American mainstream. Hours later, Trump’s Twitter account began frantically trying to backtrack, but only ended up making things even worse.

Trump began the debacle by tweeting “The Mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump. Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help. They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. 10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job.”

After he was widely called out for his sexist attack on the “nasty” mayor, his racist attack on the people of Puerto Rico, and the absurd inappropriateness of attacking Puerto Rico at all, he changed his tune. Trump, or a White House handler using Trump’s Twitter account, tweeted “Despite the Fake News Media in conjunction with the Dems, an amazing job is being done in Puerto Rico. Great people!” In a matter of a few hours, Trump had gone from accusing Puerto Ricans of being lazy people, to now declaring them “great people.” But the about face got even stranger.

Trump’s next tweet read “The Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello, is a great guy and leader who is really working hard. Thank you Ricky!” The problem: he was siding with a male Puerto Rican leader, after having attacked a female Puerto Rican leader in sexist fashion. After Trump (or his ghost-tweeter) realized he was digging an even deeper hole, he tried praising a female Puerto Rican leader: “Congresswoman Jennifer Gonzalez-Colon of Puerto Rico has been wonderful to deal with and a great representative of the people. Thank you!” In the process, he spelled her name wrong; it’s spelled “Jenniffer” with two F’s.
