Republicans are out of control. They are in vendetta mode because they don’t like what’s happening to Donald Trump. Based on the news that came out of Attorney General Merrick Garland’s testimony, they were looking for things that are not even there. They claim to be investigating the “weaponization” of the DOJ, though they never questioned the DOJ under Trump, who tried to use them as his personal hit squad. In the case of AG Garland, they not only made a mockery of their own committee, but they were downright insulting.
Representative Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) brought up the (false) claim that the DOJ is targeting Catholics or as he calls them “radical traditionalist Catholics.” Van Drew’s claim stems from a designation made by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which both the FBI and the DOJ have denied. This is ridiculous on its face. Neither the FBI nor the DOJ have any connection to SPLC, which often creates designations that they define as “hate groups.” Why they would act on such a thing is ridiculous on its face. According to CNN, Garland was so shaken by the allegation that he nearly exploded, especially after Van Drew alleged that the FBI has been “sending undercover agents into Catholic churches.” Where do they get this stuff? Part of the problem with Republicans is that they believe virtually anything anyone tells them if it seems to go against whatever nonsense they believe at the time. Take Jim Jordan’s claim that “the fix is in” with respect to charges against Hunter Biden.
David Weiss, the special prosecutor on Hunter Biden’s case is a Trump appointee. He, therefore, has no reason to give Biden any breaks. Gary Shapley, one of Jordan’s whistleblowers, has been caught in lie after lie. What type of whistleblower is this? He sounds more like a hired actor. Several members of the FBI have disputed Shapley’s claim that, during a meeting, Weiss said he wasn’t the final authority on charging Biden, intimating that the orders came from higher up (like AG Garland). Weiss and others who were also present disputed Shapley’s claim. Do Republicans even bother to investigate these claims, or do they just take the information and run? Unsurprisingly, questioning of Merrick Garland then turned to-you guessed it: Donald Trump. The Hill questioned whether they are working for the Trump campaign, which is illegal.
In response to Republican’s (stupid) questions, Garland responded that no one told him to indict Donald Trump. It was not a political move but was based on investigations conducted by Special Counsel Jack Smith. Garland, in fact, is not involved in those investigations. As he told this joke of a panel: “I am not the president’s lawyer. I will add I am not Congress’ prosecutor. The Justice Department works for the American people. Our job is to follow the facts and the law. That is what we do.” As Adam Schiff said during questioning, the Judicial Committee has become the official defense team for Donald Trump. We neither want nor deserve to have our tax dollars used for these bogus “investigations.”
