Fact check: Nickelback is not performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration
After a week in which everyone from Garth Brooks to Andrea Bocelli said no to the idea of performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration, leaving him with virtually no musician of any fame willing to participate, a rumor began spreading across social media that Trump had booked Canadian rock band Nickelback instead. But our fact check reveals that this is merely a hoax manufactured by a prankster, and it’s a rather easily disproven one.
The rumor began when the following screen capture of a supposed Donald Trump tweet began circulating on Twitter, and then later on Facebook:
The above tweet never happened.
As a result, both Trump and Nickelback took heat from various social media users. Trump was lampooned for picking a love-em-or-hate-em band that’s been the target of widespread jokes over the years by its detractors. Trump was also made fun of for not knowing that Nickelback is from Canada and not the United States.
Meanwhile Nickelback itself was chastised for supposedly agreeing to perform at the inauguration of Donald Trump, who is widely viewed by his detractors as being a racist sexual predator scam artist who was installed in the White House by the Kremlin. But as it turns out, none of the above ever really happened. One need simply look at this very real tweet from Donald Trump, which has the same date and time stamp, and starts off with the same three words:
So there we have it. Our fact check reveals that the supposed evidence of Nickelback agreeing to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration was a manufactured hoax to begin with. Any subsequent discussion and controversy regarding Trump and Nickelback across social media appears to trace back to that original fake tweet. As such there’s no known evidence of any kind that Nickelback was ever considered for the inauguration, or that the band ever considered doing it. Whether you love or hate Nickelback, there’s no need to change your view of the band based on your view of Trump.
