Grasping at straws
Donald Trump is blaming everyone for his situation except the real culprit-himself. Newsweek reported on his tirade about President Biden. According to Trump, all the indictments against him are merely part of President Biden’s reelection strategy. He posted a fake scenario wherein President Biden has indicted him “3 or 4 times to keep him [Trump] busy.” Joe Biden is busy trying to fix a country that Trump did his best to break; he doesn’t have time for Trump or his shenanigans. Even as he rails at President Biden, he tells the Georgia GOP to “stand tough” in his interview with Larry Kudlow. Unfortunately, Trump doesn’t get that the main Georgia Republican who can help him has no interest in doing so.
Trump supporters in Georgia have called for changes in the state’s rules of pardons and paroles and for the impeachment of DA Fani Willis. As the New York Times reported, their calls are falling on deaf ears. State Senator Colton Moore, who represents one of the Trumpiest districts in Georgia, asked Governor Brian Kemp to hold an emergency session on impeachment. Kemp almost immediately responded that he hasn’t seen any evidence for the impeachment of DA Willis. Brian Kemp isn’t a fool, nor is he in Trump’s camp. Kemp does well in Georgia, getting votes from Democrats and Independents along with Republicans. Rumor has it he wants to run for the Senate, and to prevail, he will need all those votes. He’s not jeopardizing that for Trump or anyone else. Apparently, Senator Moore and others have conveniently forgotten that Kemp testified before the special grand jury and likely presented some of the evidence that ultimately led to Trump’s indictment. Charles S. Bullock III, who is a political science professor at the University of Georgia, said: “It ain’t going to happen.”
Bullock is considered a leading scholar on politics in Georgia and the south in general. He opines that procedural hurdles block the way for changes in the Board of Pardons and Paroles. Indeed, the law was set up such that the governor cannot interfere, not that he wants to in this instance. As Bullock pointed out, Kemp has repeatedly refuted Trump’s claims that the election was stolen in Georgia. Several Georgia Republicans agree with Kemp, and Moore cannot get the support he wants or needs for impeachment of DA Willis, even in a majority Republican legislature. People, including Republicans, have grown weary of Trump’s lies about the election, as evidenced by four recent polls that reveal most Americans believe Trump’s indictments are justified. The polls were conducted by Quinnipiac University, the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs, Research, ABC News/Ipsos, and surprisingly, Fox News. The results show that people don’t want Trump in the presidential race at all, let alone in the White House. Fox News’ poll revealed that 53% of registered voters believe Trump acted illegally in his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. They know it, we know, and Trump knows it. Now, the prosecutors just need to prove that Trump knew and proceeded anyway, and he’ll be gone from our lives forever.
