Donald Trump takes a big step closer to directly admitting that it’s all over for him
Yesterday Donald Trump came even closer to directly admitting that he knows it’s all over for him, when he shared a social media post laying out a scenario where he’s convicted at trial and his supporters end up feeling “deprived of their candidate.” By default Trump was admitting that if he’s convicted, he won’t be a viable participant in the next election cycle.
Now Trump is once again admitting that his criminal justice system troubles are in the process of making him politically non-viable. Trump is whining and crying on social media about how the charges against him are “FORCING ME TO SPEND TIME AND MONEY AWAY FROM THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL.” Well, too damn bad, Donald. You shouldn’t have committed every crime under the sun.
Trump’s whining aside, this stands out more as an admission of defeat. First he’s basically admitting that if he’s convicted at trial it’s all over for him. Now he’s admitting that his pretrial activities are already preventing him from being out there as a real candidate.
In other words Donald Trump is now admitting what Palmer Report spelled out awhile ago: there’s simply no such thing as a guy “running for President” while preparing for multiple criminal trials. As a practical matter he can’t function as a candidate. And as a political reality, most people don’t want to donate to or nominate a guy who’s going to be in prison for the general election.
There’s a reason why Donald Trump’s campaign donations were startlingly low in the most recent quarter. It’s the same reason new Reuters polling says that roughly half of all Republican general election voters won’t vote for Trump if he’s been convicted of a felony, even if he is the nominee. And it’s the same reason Trump’s own base isn’t bothering to turn out and protest his arrests and arraignments. Trump is toast and everyone knows he’s toast. Even Trump knows he’s toast. He’s even admitting it, in increasingly direct fashion. How much longer before the media finally admits the same?
