Jack Smith sticks it to Donald Trump with another new court filing, and judge rules in Smith’s favor
After filing for a protective order last night and citing Donald Trump’s threatening Truth Social post, Jack Smith and the DOJ are now at it again. The judge ordered Trump to respond to the filing by this Monday, but Trump’s lawyers asked for a three day delay. Smith didn’t take too kindly to it.
The DOJ response to Trump’s request for a delay included this rather sharp barb: “Rather than spend time complying with the court’s order, the defendant drafted a filing as to why he did not have time to review the 5pg protective order.”
Sure enough, it worked. Judge Chutkan has now sided with the DOJ and denied Trump’s request for a delay. Trump now has until 5pm Monday to address the request for a protective order and, by default, try to explain his threatening social media post. We’re now expecting the DOJ to take some additional action after Trump made a post today aimed at intimidating a star witness. This stuff just doesn’t fly when you’re a criminal defendant awaiting trial.
