The GOP’s worst nightmare is coming true
The GOP’s worst nightmare is coming true. That nightmare would of course be Donald Trump. And his criminal activities. And his looming trials. One of those trials is set for May of next year. And that’s why Republicans can’t stop freaking out.
Somebody on social media said it so gracefully: “It’s dead center in the middle of the Republican primary.” Trump is set to go on trial on charges that could give him decades in prison at the exact same time the Republican party is voting for their nominee.
And what if it’s Trump? I don’t think it will be. I think he’ll have dropped out long before then, but let’s suppose that he doesn’t, and Trump becomes the Republican nominee. Let’s also suppose that Trump is found guilty. This is the Republicans’ deepest and starkest nightmare
What the heck would they do? This is sort of a rhetorical question because we know what they would do. They would run him as their nominee. They would stick up for him. They would defend him. A man on his way to prison.
Now this scenario may not happen, but let’s just say it does. How is Trump going to run a campaign? I imagine Republicans have thought of this. Will he appear in an orange jumpsuit from prison? Will millions of people be given the choice of voting for a convicted criminal?
But worse than that, worse than that, for the Republicans, how on earth would they defend him? What on earth would they say? Here are a few things that I propose they will say:
“This was all the doings of the deep state. Trump did nothing wrong. It was the FBI and CIA and White House, and all the millions of Democratic voters colluding against him.”
“Trump is the most brilliant man we’ve ever known and if anybody can run this country from prison, it will certainly be he.”
“You should vote for him, do not let the fact that he’s in jail for the next 30 years stop you.”
OK I’m being a little mischievous here, but the thing is I might not be too far off base. Article after article is talking about the GOP’s dilemma.
So this fear the GOP has is a valid one, and it could be over in five minutes. It could be over in five minutes if the little party that couldn’t, got their shit together and denounced Donald Trump. Their sleep would be better, the self-esteem would be better. Everything would be better for them. Sad to say they can’t see it.
