Back when she was running for president, then-Senator Kamala Harris of California was one of the most relentlessly attacked candidates in the race, with bad faith attacks targeted at her record as California’s attorney general – despite the early levels of popularity and support she enjoyed among Democrats, and the fact that she was pretty progressive as an attorney general for that large state, with considerably lower incarceration rates when she left than when she started. Their attacks ultimately didn’t work – as she is now Vice President Harris and on Friday, speaking in Florida, she made it clear why right-wingers were afraid and worked overtime to platform their nonsensical attacks disguised as attacks from the left.

New education standards for teaching history in Florida have done all but feed school children propaganda – a favorite accusation Republicans like to make- by suggesting that slavery was actually good for those who were caught up in it. This is hardly new – it’s a decades old racist trope that was used to defend slavery back when it was legal. So disturbed by the developments, Vice President Harris made an appearance in Florida where she openly denounced DeSantis’ new scheme, with the ingenious move of never mentioning the governor by name during her fiery takedown.

This is unnecessary, to debate whether enslaved people benefited from slavery. Are you kidding me?” she said. Florida is a horrifying example of what conservatives want to spread across the rest of the country – something the vice president laid clear in her speech – that the attack on education there is a threat to our own freedoms everywhere if we don’t fight to remove Republicans from every branch of power.
