President Biden is right: “This is not a normal court.” First, Roe v. Wade, and now, affirmative action. The Supreme Court continues to show its disdain for freedom and equality, as in their minds, we’re now all equal and free. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The Court’s affirmative action opinion, penned by Chief Justice John Roberts reads in part: “Both programs lack sufficiently focused and measurable objectives warranting the use of race, unavoidably employ race in a negative manner, involve racial stereotyping, and lack meaning end points.” Apparently, racial stereotyping is okay if it has a negative impact on minorities, but “stereotyping,” as the Court has defined it, to help a young person improve his or her life is wrong. No, what’s wrong is the Supreme Court. Of all the justices on the bench, Clarence Thomas is most happy about this ruling.

Thomas likens affirmative action to segregation. Only in his head does this make sense. Affirmative action was devised to “level the playing field,” so to speak. Those who didn’t have the same educational exposure, making standardized testing difficult, had a shot at a good school. It also created diversity, which is a good thing. Thomas’s nonsense is exactly what Justice Sonia Sotomayor addressed in her dissenting opinion: “In so holding, the Court cements a superficial rule of colorblindness as a constitutional principle in an endemically segregated society where race has always mattered and continues to matter.” What is obvious with this Court is their zeal to take away freedoms we have enjoyed for decades, and they display absolutely no sympathy toward others.

Last week, the Court rejected President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. Many people cannot afford to pay back these loans, but does the conservative majority care? Of course not. They have all made their fortunes, and they could care less about those who have not. In addition to overturning Roe v. Wade, they have now outlawed affirmative action (which is not about quotas, as some think), they have blocked student debt forgiveness, and they are against gay rights. The one thing they are likely proud of doing is dismantling the divide between church and state, which is wrong. If churches want to be part of the state, they need to start paying taxes, but with this Court, they get to enjoy both worlds. At least they did accomplish one thing that will make the MAGA contingent unhappy.

According to NBC News, SCOTUS just made it harder to try to overturn the upcoming election. The Court had been asked (by Republicans) to limit state rights with respect to reviewing election-related issues. The case stemmed from an appeal of the North Carolina Supreme Court’s ruling that a new congressional map was nothing more than Republican gerrymandering, which ruling SCOTUS upheld. If you think about it, this ruling falls in line with their belief that since things are equal, there is no need for Republicans to create districts that favor them. At least they apply their twisted view to everything. In this case, that’s a good thing.
