Earlier this week twenty House Republicans declined to go along with an attempt at using a phony scandal to censure House Democrat Adam Schiff. It was a clear cut sign that House Republicans know Donald Trump is going down, and are increasingly hesitant to get dragged down with him. After all, they’ll still have to try to win reelection in 2024 after he’s dragged off to prison.

When Trump publicly attacked those twenty House Republicans and called for them to be primaried out of their seats in 2024, it was an equally clear sign that the Republican Party has a problem. As Trump moves closer to prison, elected Republicans are inching further away from him. And as they do so, Trump is more intent on punishing them for having done so.

Because Trump’s situation will continue to become more untenable as 2023 goes on, the Republicans will have to keep pulling even further away from him – and it’s going to keep getting uglier. We’re already at a point where House Republican Thomas Massie is openly feuding with an infamous Trump fan named “catturd” on Twitter. That’s right, a member of Congress is feuding with someone named catturd.

This is hilarious, but it’s also quite a serious harbinger of where things are headed. An increasing number of Republicans are going to conclude that they’ll lose their seats in 2024 if they don’t distance themselves from a destroyed Donald Trump. Yet Trump’s biggest fans are going to continue to insist that the Republicans stand by Trump, even as Trump hits rock bottom. The infighting is going to be a sight to see.
