Lindsey Graham just gave away the game
We all know there’s something wrong with Lindsey Graham. His behavior toward Donald Trump does not match up with that of a rational person. So is Graham mentally incompetent? Is Trump or someone else blackmailing him? We still don’t know. But even with Graham’s erraticism, his behavior does sometimes give things away.
For instance, it’s not that difficult to figure out that Jack Smith is likely to criminally indict Donald Trump soon on charges related to January 6th. Smith wouldn’t have gone to all the trouble of having the courts force former VP Mike Pence to testify against Trump to a grand jury, unless he’d already decided to indict Trump. That indictment will likely take place in Washington DC, where the crimes occurred, making it a separate case and trial from Trump’s existing classified documents indictment in federal court in Florida.
Lindsey Graham said this to a group of reporters today: “If the Special Counsel [Jack Smith] indicts President Trump in Washington, DC, for anything related to January 6th, that will be considered a major outrage by Republicans because you could convict any Republican of anything in Washington DC.”
Let’s parse this. Graham is admitting that Donald Trump is going to be convicted in Washington DC. He’s trying to get out ahead of it and spin it by suggesting that it’ll only happen because DC juries are somehow biased. But in reality, the juror screening processes mean that any jury in a trial this high profile is likely to be unbiased. What Graham is really admitting here is that he knows the evidence against Trump in relation to January 6th is so damning, Trump will be convicted almost automatically.
What’s interesting about this is that while Lindsey Graham is not known to be a target in Jack Smith’s January 6th probe, Graham is smack in the middle of Fani Willis’ separate but related election fraud probe in Fulton County Georgia. When Graham openly frets about how Trump is going to prison for January 6th, it may be because Graham is worried about going to prison as well.
