Surprise: Jack Smith has secretly had two different grand juries in the Trump classified documents probe all along
For months, isolated details have been making their way to the media about Jack Smith’s grand jury in the Trump classified documents probe. Those details have often consisted of the name of the latest person to testify and little more. It’s never been nearly enough to try to piece together the full story. I’ve cautioned everyone that the sum total of what had been reported about this probe in the media was probably only a small fraction of what all has been going on behind the scenes.
We were reminded of this yet again on Monday, when the New York Times revealed that Jack Smith actually has two grand juries going in the Trump classified documents probe, one in Washington DC and the other in Florida.
Why is Smith doing it this way? He may be indicting Donald Trump in DC since that’s where Trump first began his criminal act by illegally taking the documents with him when he left office, and indicting the Mar-a-Lago underlings in Florida since that’s where they first got involved in hiding the documents from investigators.
It could just as easily be that Smith is indicting Trump for classified documents in DC because he’s already decided he’ll also be indicting Trump for January 6th and wire fraud in DC, and he wants all the charges against Trump to be in the same circuit. Or it could be some other explanation entirely.
We’ll find out soon enough why Smith is doing it this way. But the real story is that none of us knew until just now that Jack Smith even had two different grand juries in the classified documents case. That’s just how little we know about what all Smith has been doing. I suspect we’re about to spend the rest of the week having a number of “aha” and a few outright “holy crap” moments as the endgame details of this probe come to light.
