Donald Trump just screwed up and told the truth for once
When the Dobbs decision was finally dropped nearly a year ago, I was among the people highly cynical about the news helping Democrats win elections – that the people who cared about the issue were already routinely voting for us as it were, and that conservative conditioning would lead people to be angry with Democrats for not sufficiently protecting us from the evil thing that Republicans have been plotting to do for the last five decades.
I was rather swiftly proven wrong – with a flurry of Democratic overperformance in special elections that followed, and the weak Republican underperformance that followed in the 2022 midterms where they just barely retook the House – and this is one time when I’m certainly glad I was proven wrong.
I wondered how much Republicans planned to shy away from it in 2024, if they would be able to shift the blame – but – the former guy, who’s still their standard-bearer, refuses to let it happen. That’s the only reason his Fox News town hall this week is worth mentioning at all. As Sean Hannity once again fed him softball questions, Donald Trump openly bragged: “I did something nobody thought was possible. I got rid of Roe v. Wade.”
It’s one of those rare times where he told the truth on both counts – a whole lot of people believed Roe v. Wade was here to stay, and it’s only because of Trump’s SCOTUS picks that it was finally killed. He gave us the clip that will make us win in 2024 – and will cost Republicans voters in every election down the ballot.
