The Republican party is like a rogue ocean wave. One minute — calmness; the next, pummeling everything in sight, especially honor, courage, and human dignity. The GOP, in what is one of their worst decisions yet (and they’ve made lots of bad ones) have decided to leave DC for the long weekend instead of continuing talks on the debt ceiling.

After all, it’s a holiday weekend. I suppose some Republicans have places to go, people to see, and sleep to catch up on. Now I’ve no doubt President Biden will win on the subject of the debt ceiling. This is why I’ve chosen to hardly write about it. But the GOP’s antics deserve an article because running out of town to ham it up for a long weekend is not the actions of a political party that gives a damn.

All along McCarthy has warned about the perils of the economy crashing. So why are they suddenly leaving town now? That certainly does not sound to me like they are concerned about anything except perhaps getting their party on.

And Democrats are calling their behavior out. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said: “We’re here. We continue to work. And unfortunately, republicans have chosen to get out of town.” Never underestimate the Republican’s ability to get out of doing any sort of work.

Look, I know there’s a holiday coming up. I know that many in the GOP would rather be doing something else. But like Mick Jagger says, you can’t always get what you want, can you? Many people work on holidays. I plan to work this weekend. So do many journalists, nurses, doctors, librarians, artists, sales reps, etc.

So why can’t Republicans manage to get shit done on a holiday? Wouldn’t it have been better to stay and negotiate?

And it doesn’t help that this crisis is entirely manufactured and made up because the GOP enjoys drama and perhaps wants to crash the economy. This little vacation break is not going to bode well for Republicans, and who knows? Perhaps it It’ll even make its way to some campaign commercials.
