The day after a civil trial jury found that Donald Trump likely sexually assaulted and defamed E. Jean Carroll, Trump appeared on live national television and attacked Carroll again. At the time some observers pointed to it as a sign that Trump could still get away with whatever he wanted. But in reality, nothing works that way – at least now that he’s no longer protected by the office of the presidency.

E. Jean Carroll has now filed for additional damages against Donald Trump, according to multiple major news outlets. None of them have stated a specific dollar amount, but it is being characterized as “very substantial.” Given that the original damages totaled $5 million, “very substantial” additional damages sound like they could be an amount large enough to make the original $5 million look small in comparison.

Carroll may indeed have an even stronger case this time around. Trump made his latest remarks in clear defiance of a jury’s ruling, meaning he was intentionally thumbing his nose at the court system. His remarks can also be seen as Trump attempting to retaliate against Carroll for daring to pursue her legal rights – and the court system tends to punish retaliation pretty severely.

Meanwhile, even as E. Jean Carroll seeks an even bigger civil trial victory against Donald Trump, keep in mind that Trump is also on track to face criminal trials brought by the Manhattan DA, the Fulton County DA, and DOJ Special Counsel Jack Smith. Each of those three criminal cases will come with a prison sentence if he’s convicted. Trump’s legal troubles just keep escalating, and the consequences for him will only get more severe.
