Senator says Sarah Huckabee Sanders may be indicted
Last week Palmer Report pointed out that White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders may have gotten herself on the hook for obstruction of justice charges in Donald Trump’s Russia scandal, based on her words from the podium (link). We weren’t merely winging it; she really did commit a serious and prosecutable crime. Sure enough, now a U.S. Senator is confirming that Huckabee Sanders could end up indicted over it.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse has appeared on MSNBC and said the following: “If the motivation was to poison the reputation of James Comey with the grand jurors, you’ve got another count in the indictment” (link). Whitehouse sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is investigating the Trump-Russia scandal. He also has a background as a U.S. Attorney, so he knows how the law applies to these kinds of situations.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders got herself in trouble specifically with her public attacks on former FBI Director James Comey, and her public calls for the Department of Justice to pursue phony criminal charges against Comey. She was Deputy Press Secretary back when Donald Trump fired Comey in an attempt at sabotaging the Russia investigation, which was obstruction of justice on his part. At the least, she was a witness to this crime, and she may have been a co-conspirator. Her subsequent effort to taint Comey, in an investigation in which she’s a subject, represents obstruction of justice on her part.
It’s not that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is looking to put Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and others in her situation, in prison for their obstruction crimes. Instead, he’ll use the threat of criminal prosecution in order to get them to flip on Donald Trump and testify against him. While some of Trump’s underlings may be willing to go to prison for him, or to risk their futures on the hope that he’ll be able to legally pardon his own co-conspirators, others won’t take the chance – and they’ll simply flip.
