Today a civil trial jury found Donald Trump liable for committing sexual battery against E. Jean Carroll and lying about it, and awarded Carroll a total of $5 million in damages. It was a total vindication for Carroll, and an ugly loss for Trump that might hurt him even more in the court of public opinion than in the wallet.

Suffice it to say, Trump wasn’t happy with the verdict. He promptly went on social media and had an all caps meltdown, bizarrely declaring that “I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHO THIS WOMAN IS.” He then went on to insist that this was a “WITCH HUNT” (the jury clearly disagreed), and that it was a “VERY UNFAIR TRIAL” (in reality he refused to testify on his own behalf).

But none of this lying and whining changes the outcome. Donald Trump lost. E. Jean Carroll has been fully vindicated, in the court of the law and in the court of public opinion. And there is nothing that Trump can do about it. Trump failed to delay this trial. He failed to drag out the verdict to his liking. He simply lost, which is all he does these days.

The same will be true with Donald Trump’s numerous upcoming criminal trials. He won’t be able to magically make them go away, or magically delay them past the election. He simply does not have these kinds of magical powers. His ugly loss in the E. Jean Carroll trial, and his total inability to do anything to keep it from happening, are proof that he’s about as powerless as can be when it comes to what’s happening to him.
