House Republican George Santos, or whatever his name is, reportedly privately promised local New York Republican leaders awhile back that he wouldn’t seek reelection in 2024. But as has turned out to be the case with everything else in his life, Santos was lying.

George Santos has now officially kicked off his 2024 reelection campaign today. This is really just sad, on a few levels. Santos remains under active criminal investigation by the DOJ and the local District Attorney, and given the severity of the evidence against him, there is good reason to expect he’ll likely end up indicted long before 2024.

Even if Santos does somehow survive the criminal justice system, it’s difficult to imagine any scenario where he would even win the 2024 Republican primary race in his district, given that his approval rating is very low back home with Republicans and Democrats alike.

This all feels like it’s just a cash grab. George Santos is trying to see how much money he can fundraise now, so he can use it for who-knows-what once his political career finishes falling apart. Then again, given that Santos’ fundraising efforts over the past three months have somehow lost money, this isn’t likely to go particularly far either.

While Santos’ insistence on throwing his (fake) hat in the 2024 ring is annoying and disgraceful, it probably only further helps the Democrats’ odds of ending up with Santos’ seat. The mess that Santos has already made has set up the NY-03 race such that it’s already rated “Lean Democrat” by Cook Political Report. The longer Santos keeps sticking his nose into the 2024 race in NY-03, the more likely the voters there are to side with the Democratic candidate. George Santos just opened up a whole new can of worms, for himself and for the Republican Party.
