UPDATE, 9:31pm: it’s now official. Original article follows. Today was going to end up being a groundbreaking and historic day in politics, and not just because Donald Trump was being arrested and arraigned. Today was also election day for the swing seat in the Wisconsin Supreme Court – and it looks like the Democratic Party-backed candidate has won that race.

Dave Wasserman of Cook Political Report likes to emphasize that when he says “I’ve seen enough” and announces who’s won an election, it’s not an official call – not even on behalf of his own publication. But Wasserman indeed just announced that Democratic Party-backed candidate Janet Protasiewicz has won in Wisconsin. With the votes still being counted, he says he expects Protasiewicz will end up winning by a 4 to 7 point margin.

Assuming this unofficial call from Wasserman holds up – and his unofficial calls always do – this is a huge step forward in two ways. First, it’ll help immediately help shore up the basic rights of women, LGBT people, and others in the state of Wisconsin. Second, it means that the votes in Wisconsin will be counted accurately and fairly in the 2024 presidential election, ensuring the Republicans can’t try to steal the state if they end up narrowly losing it.
