When you’ve lost Mitt Romney…
It’s always refreshing in politics when a politician says what they mean. Far too many do not. Sometimes, particularly when a politician appears on television, one feels they need a decoder just to figure out what they’re trying to say. But no such decoder was necessary for the nasty little event that took place between a politician and a pathological liar.
The setting was the House chamber where the State of the Union address by President Biden was being held. As people piled into the room and struggled to find seats, one person was already comfortably seated. That person was George Santos.
Santos had reportedly been one of the first to arrive. And he wanted a good seat — perhaps a seat on the end, where people walked in. Rumor had it he wanted to shake President Biden’s hand.
Having Santos stain the room was an embarrassment for the GOP, and something tells me they knew it. Mitt Romney of Utah sure knew it. As Romney entered the chamber, he and George Santos had words. This little exchange was seen by a lot of people, including viewers at home like myself, who wondered what on earth these two had to say to each other.
Romney looked mad. He seemed really mad. And it was shortly after that that we got word on what actually transpired between the two men. “You don’t belong here!” Ouch! Romney, who I’ve never liked, made himself at least a little likable the other night. He told Santos off — and it was short and sweet.
“You don’t belong here.” Wouldn’t it be nice if EVERY Republican would follow Romney’s lead? I know, I know. That is asking for too much. Romney later spoke to CNN where he said he was sharply critical of Santos, who appeared to be trying to shake the hands of lawmakers.
Romney mused aloud that Santos really should have sat in the back and shut up — comments that apparently Santos did not like. And Santos, far from being cowed, was defiant. He posted on Twitter after the speech, jeering Romney and saying he’d never be president.
So this was quite a scene. I must give credit where credit’s due and compliment Romney for being one of the few republicans with the balls to tell it like it is regarding Santos. As for Santos, no handshake with the president, few friends, and an embarrassment to the republican party.
