Just how fragile is Kevin McCarthy’s speakership? It took him fifteen rounds to win that title, and even then he only got there by the narrowest of margins. McCarthy can’t afford to keep serial fraudster George Santos off House committees, for fear that Santos could turn against him, and that one lost vote could end McCarthy’s speakership.

Yet even as McCarthy continues to cave to the likes of George Santos and Marjorie Taylor Greene, McCarthy is doing precisely what weak leaders tend to do: he’s trying to cover for his weakness by making dumb “aggressive” moves that he thinks will make him look strong.

For instance, McCarthy is attempting to keep respected House Democrats Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell from serving on the House Intelligence Committee, citing whacked out conspiracy theories that Republicans have made up about the two of them. But even as McCarthy tries to flex his nonexistent muscles on this, other House Republicans like Nancy Mace are criticizing McCarthy for banning any Democrats from committees.

For the record, Nancy Mace is every bit as much of a corrupt liar and scumbag as Kevin McCarthy is. But Mace knows that if she can weaken McCarthy enough, he’ll be ousted, and perhaps she’ll become Speaker. So of course she’s going to jump on any opportunity to bash McCarthy’s decision-making. The sharks are circling around McCarthy already, and they’re coming from within his own House Republican caucus.
