When Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Special Counsel Jack Smith to oversee the DOJ’s multiple criminal cases against Donald Trump, it was pretty clear that it meant indictments were coming. The only question was when. Now we’re getting that answer.

Jack Smith is set to make “critical” charging decisions “possibly within a matter of weeks,” according to a new report from Bloomberg. Let’s parse what this means. Smith wouldn’t have left his prosecutorial job at The Hague to take this job if he wasn’t expecting to carry out meaningful prosecutions. So we know he’s going to bring high level charges. And now we’re being told that it’s going to start happening within weeks.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that Donald Trump himself will be included in the first round of major criminal indictments. Prosecutors often like to indict a big fish’s co-conspirators first, in order to scare one or more of them into immediately flipping on that big fish.

But the word “critical” tells us a lot. Jack Smith wasn’t brought in to prosecute low level Capitol invaders. He was brought in to prosecute Donald Trump and his highest level co-conspirators. And now we’re being told that the “critical decisions” are mere weeks away. Buckle up.
