Deservedly so, Senator Raphael Warnock was elected to a full term. The race was far too close, but it’s not really that surprising. Republicans have consistently shown that they vote party over country. When Senator Warnock gave his acceptance speech, he said two very important things. First, “the people have spoken.” Read that slowly, Republicans; the majority has spoken. We are tired of your fake sentiments, your choice of party over country, and your policies that do nothing for the people.

Second, Senator Warnock said that just because he won does not mean voter suppression doesn’t exist. Specifically, he said: “There are people who will look at the outcome of this race and say there is no voter suppression in Georgia. Let me be clear. Just because people endured long lines that wrapped around buildings, some blocks long. Just because they endured the rain and the cold and all kinds of tricks in order to vote doesn’t mean that voter suppression does not exist. It simply means that you the people have decided that your voices will not be silenced.” Eloquent, to the point, and true. Warnock increases the senate majority to 51 versus 49 Republicans, guaranteeing that President Joe Biden can continue to reshape the judiciary to reflect the people of this country.

Warnock’s victory is also another punch in the eye to Donald Trump. As ABC News reported, voters in Georgia chose a quality candidate and rejected yet another incompetent Trump lackey. Trump continues to lose his grip on people, and someday, he will see that himself. He doesn’t see it with his 30 to 40% approval rating. He probably doesn’t see it in Utah’s poll that put him in third place behind Ron DeSantis and Liz Cheney. Even more important than sticking it to Trump, however, is the pride Georgians feel in turning out the vote for the candidate who will best represent the state.

Georgians determined not to be represented by an ignorant man who doesn’t even live in our state. Warnock’s victory makes him the first Black Senator from the State of Georgia elected to a full term and only the eleventh nationwide. We obviously have a lot of work to do in this country with respect to race. We should not be in the 21st Century, saying anything about any “firsts” when it comes to Black people. It’s wrong, and it’s sad. We need to realize that people are people. Two Black men were vying for the seat, so whites had the choice to vote for one of them or stay home. They chose the wrong one-the one who is only Black on the surface. They voted for him because he was the best their party could do. This is like buying an iffy retread instead of a new tire because the store you went to had only one choice. That isn’t good enough. Wake up, people. Democrat, Republican, Independent-no matter your party choice, always vote for the one who will represent you as a citizen of this country and not one who represents a party that doesn’t care about you one way or the other.
