How we got it done
I never believed the polls. I always knew it would be about Roevember — always. Times may change, and so might people, but women do not change that much. From the beginning of time, women have fought hard for equal status. Women have won many battles, so why would that stop now?
So I would silently sneer at these smug pundits when they would show up on my television screen. Many of them, speaking loftily, would pretend to know some deep and dark secret that only they were privy to.
And yet it was wrong. They knew nothing, and their lack of knowledge clung to them like old cobwebs as these pundits struggled to convince the American people that women had given up.
No such thing was even possible. For women, never give up. I don’t think it’s even in their nature. And Republicans were the last to get the Roevember memo.
And now, slowly, a few of them are starting to see. Utah Senator Mitt Romney even spoke aloud the truth — that abortion “was a much bigger issue against us than we anticipated.”
You think? Senator Thom Tilles of North Carolina also spoke of Roevember. “Dobbs did have an impact,” he admitted. Retiring Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey said much the same. But why the question must be asked. Why did Republicans not see it?
I believe it’s because, time and again, Republicans continue to underestimate women — and their power. Perhaps it’s because republicans look down on women. Many of them certainly do not respect them.
They perhaps saw what they wanted to see. When they looked into the trees, filled with all the issues voters so cared about, they allowed their lofty sun to blind them to what they saw in those trees. They simply ignored what the voters wanted.
They ignored the seeds of rage, slowly growing and frowning upon them, that would mean a republican wipe-out of epic proportions. And they lost. They lost for many reasons, but one big one was Roevember.
Roevember came knocking, and Republicans could not hear their knocks because they’re a selfish party that sees only what they choose to see. But they can’t ignore what stands in front of them now.
And that is failure.
