Merrick Garland’s “inevitable” indictment of Donald Trump
Because the DOJ only periodically makes news about its Donald Trump investigation when it has to file something in court, most days go by without any public updates about the case. This creates a vacuum where the media and the public end up resorting to a lot of filler. This often includes nonsense narratives about Merrick Garland supposedly being too afraid of right wing backlash to actually indict Trump, and other storylines that are simply made up out of thin air.
And of course Garland and the DOJ don’t really seem to care about that. Their job is to bring an indictment against Trump that’s so overwhelming, it’s near-guaranteed to get a conviction at trial. And while they’re still building out that massive criminal case against Trump, they’re not worried about what you think of them. You’ll either be satisfied with the final result or you won’t.
Meanwhile, Franklin Foer of the Atlantic has taken the remarkable step of actually interviewing Merrick Garland, and the people closest to him, in an effort to figure out whether the DOJ will indict Trump.
Foer is adamant that he’s not working with any inside information about any decisions that have or haven’t been made. But he’s just as adamant that, based on the totality of what he’s learned from Garland and about Garland, there’s no doubt that Garland will indict Trump. You can find the lengthy read here.
