It’s time to take our eyes off Donald Trump and all his messes for a bit. He dominates the news because he’s bad news, and the media enjoys bad news. Apparently, it helps their ratings. Well, how about some good news for a change? For months now, we’ve heard how Republicans are poised to take back the House and the Senate primarily, according to-yes-the media, because of President Joe Biden’s low approval ratings. President Biden was getting blamed for everything from the gas prices to inflation, but since none of us are psychic, we had no idea what might be coming down the road.

President Biden has signed important bills that will positively impact the lives of most Americans. First, he signed off on a gun safety bill. This bill needs to go even further, but it is a step in the right direction. Biden then signed an executive order supporting the semiconductor industry with the CHIPS and Science Act. Most recently, Biden enjoyed one of his greatest accomplishments to date with the Inflation Reduction Act, which will address climate change, health care, and deficit reduction, but he’s not done yet. He announced just this week that his administration plans to cancel $10,000 in student debt for low and middle-income borrowers, and in a move that surprised many, President Biden approved the CIA drone killing of Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in Afghanistan, which somewhat reversed all the complaints that Biden pulled the troops out of Afghanistan prematurely. These are all great accomplishments that have caused President Biden’s approval rating to improve, the credit for which mostly goes to independents. Independents are an important group to both parties, and it certainly doesn’t hurt to see them supporting President Biden. The question is whether they will support other Democrats as we move into the midterms.

Republicans were predicted to overtake Democrats following the midterms, but that is now looking less likely. One of their biggest problems is Donald Trump and his mess with top-secret documents, fighting to keep things that don’t belong to him. It doesn’t help Republicans either that the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which is still very fresh in people’s minds. Kansas, a traditionally red state, voted a resounding “no” to limiting abortions. This could well be a trend that will take us into the midterms. Republicans were hoping to capitalize on inflation and an underwhelming response to President Biden’s first 18 months in office, but things seem to be turning around. No one talks about all the jobs created under Biden’s watch, and PBS reported that the deficit will decline by $1.7 trillion, which it touts as “the single largest decline in the federal deficit in American history.”

Cliché aside, it’s hard to keep a good man down, and Joe Biden is a good man. He has spent his entire life in service to this country, and it was only fitting that he ascended to the presidency after the most volatile presidency in U.S. history. Say what you want about President Biden, but he is working hard to change things in ways that benefit us all.
