RNC finally pulls the financial plug on a collapsing Donald Trump
Even as Donald Trump has become less relevant as a political figure and more relevant as a criminal target, the Republican National Committee has been paying his legal bills. Given that Trump has no political future, this can only be seen as the RNC trying to bribe him into not attacking Republican candidates, or perhaps trying to bribe him into keeping quiet about the Republican Party’s dirtiest secrets.
In any case, even as people are starting to ask questions about why related groups like the NRSC are so broke, the RNC has continued to pump money into Trump’s legal defense, when that money could be going to Republican midterm candidates. The RNC has reportedly threatened to cut Trump off financially if he announced a 2024 presidential campaign before the midterms โ a sign of just how non-serious such a “campaign” would be, and how much the Republicans would have to worry about such an announcement would blow back against them in the midterms.
But now Politico is reporting that the RNC is not paying any of Trump’s legal bills when it comes to the DOJ’s criminal probe into his theft of classified documents. No specific reason is being given, but it’s not difficult to figure out that even the RNC โ which is run by complicit Trump loyalist Ronna McDaniel โ is now trying to get out from under Trump’s collapse.
As Donald Trump continued to circle the drain, most of his allies were always going to have a theoretical cutoff point where that ally would selfishly decide to ditch Trump in the name of trying not to go down with him. It looks like the RNC may have finally reached that point, at least from a financial standpoint. More Trump allies will follow the RNC out the door. Only the dumbest, most compromised, or most blackmailed of Trump loyalists will stick with him until the bitter end of his downfall.
