We’re about to get a big peek at what Merrick Garland really has in store for Donald Trump
When it comes to the Donald Trump search warrant affidavit that’s being released tomorrow, the judge has reportedly given the DOJ all the redactions it proposed. So tomorrow’s unsealed affidavit will be precisely what the DOJ wants the public (and Trump) to know, nothing more, nothing less – and that in itself could provide clues about the timeline for Trump’s arrest.
The DOJ could be planning to indict Trump next week, or next year. It’s anyone’s guess. But if it is planning to arrest Trump soon, it would seemingly be less guarded about what all it allows to become public tomorrow.
In other words, it would be time for the DOJ to start preparing the public for the fact that a former President is about to be arrested. Prosecutors often give details to the media just before a public figure is indicted, for that reason. But since this affidavit is coming out tomorrow anyway, the DOJ has a more direct way of preparing the public for Trump’s imminent arrest, simply by leaving some of the ugliest details about his guilt unredacted.
On the other hand, if tomorrow’s affidavit is almost completely blacked out in comical fashion, this could suggest that the DOJ is still quite a way off from indicting Trump, and doesn’t want to give anything away to his legal team in the meantime.
The big question continues to be whether the DOJ plans to indict Trump now over classified documents and then add charges later for election crimes, or if the DOJ plans to wait until all charges are ready before bringing any of them. And we just have no way of knowing that answer.
