In an utterly bizarre development today, it turns out Alex Jones’ lawyers mistakenly gave Sandy Hook lawyers the entire contents of Jones’ phone for the past two years – and Jones lawyers spent twelve days failing to come clean, even as the Sandy Hook lawyers baited Jones into perjuring himself. Jones will now surely lose the case, which he was going to lose anyway – but he has a far bigger problem.

The January 6th Committee is reportedly already working up a subpoena asking Sandy Hook lawyers to turn over Alex Jones’ phone contents, per Rolling Stone. We’d guess the DOJ is probably doing the same. If these Jones texts really do go back two years, that would include all his 1/6-related stuff. In other words, civil perjury is the least of Jones’ worries. He should just cut a January 6th cooperating plea deal now.

There are questions as to whether Jones is stable enough to be a reliable government witness against Trump. But such questions often come down to whether there’s evidence to corroborate their testimony. In this instance, they’ll have the evidence anyway.

More to the point, the Feds are apparently about to have any incriminating 1/6-related text messages that Jones exchanged with Roger Stone, Steve Bannon, and any Trump White house people. They’ll all now have to consider flipping, and some of them would make more stable witnesses than Jones.

We often talk about how the real world legal system is not like a Law & Order episode, where evidence just cutely falls into place as needed. In the real world, most of the time it’s about grinding it out and building overwhelmingly comprehensive criminal cases until targets finally start gradually caving or giving each other up. But today’s Alex Jones phone development really is like something out of a TV script – or perhaps even too on the nose for a TV script.

Every single person in Trump world who ever texted Alex Jones now has to think hard about how this development impacts them. Some of them are now exposed to criminal liability that they thought they were going to get away with. There are only going to be a finite number of lenient cooperation deals to go around, and anyone in Trump world with even half a brain knows it.
