Liz Cheney just pummeled Donald Trump
Trying to speak to power-hungry Republicans about Donald Trump and the January 6 hearings is impossible. It is impossible because they are in willful denial. Their state of denial runs deep. They don’t WANT to know.
And thus, attempting to have a sane and rational discussion with these people is like trying to hug your own reflection on the water. It isn’t possible. And yet, this is exactly what Rep. Liz Cheney just did at the Reagan Library, using thundering oratory that garnered a standing ovation.
Before I go on with the nuts and bolts of this story, to be clear. There is no way Liz Cheney is a friend. Her politics are frighteningly conservative, and I’d never vote for her. But there can be no denying she has been doing her work on the January 6 committee fantastically. So let us examine Cheney’s words the other day — because there is wisdom in them. Here is some of what she said:
“I know at this moment we are confronting a domestic threat we have never faced before, and that is a former president who is attempting to unravel the foundations of our constitutional republic.”
“Many urge we do not confront Donald Trump, that we look away.”
“As the full picture is coming into view with the January 6 committee, it has become clear that the efforts Donald Trump oversaw and engaged in were even more chilling and more threatening than we could have imagined.”
And what will be remembered in history:
“The reality we face today as Republicans, as we think about the choice in front of us, we have to choose because Republicans cannot be loyal to both Donald Trump and to the Constitution at this moment.”
What a moment of reckoning for the GOP. The truth has come to the GOP with these words. It can be their Swan song, if you will or maybe not. But make no mistake — if the Republican party does not embrace the truth and the WISDOM of these words, they are over. They have a choice.
Will the song go on for what once was a cohesive political party? Or will the party — blemished by Trump and scarred by insurrection — turn to dust? It is their choice. I fear they will not make the right one.
