Perhaps the worst thing about the Jan 6 insurrection is that it wasn’t really all that surprising for the average person who was paying attention and knew what kind of animal the former guy was even before he was first elected.

Donald Trump has never been someone to accept the reality of his own failure, or to accept responsibility for his own actions, both of which led to a scenario that could have been even worse than what played out on that particular day a year and a half ago. Unfortunately, the majority of the GOP has been supportive of the former guy for their own selfish reasons, even after he’s no longer in power – if only for the simple reason that much of the party is afraid of being primaried successfully before a competitive midterm.

The problem is that much of the party is quietly supportive of the former guy and his message – however treacherous it is – with recurring threats of violence like the one recently made against Rep. Adam Kinzinger and his family. Kinzinger, a House Republican who isn’t running for re-election, has had enough and reading the threat addressed to his wife on live TV Monday, demanded of his party what we should all be asking: How much more violence will the GOP be okay with? They’re not hiding it at this point – they’re even teasing it in their commercials.

The rhetoric needs to be why are Republicans okay with this – and the answer is obvious – it’s the only thing they have left, particularly as the party’s active role in the Jan 6 insurrection comes clearer.
