January 6th Committee targets Ginni Thomas
For all the media buzz and social media debate about whether the January 6th Committee would end up covering the role that Supreme Court spouse Ginni Thomas played in the election overthrow plot, everyone missed one key point. This committee has displayed a consistent pattern of building up to these kinds of things and then seizing on that momentum.
Sure enough, yesterday the committee let the media know that it had emails between Ginni Thomas and Donald Trump’s election lawyer John Eastman. This is a huge deal, given that Eastman was one of the central figures in this criminal plot to overthrow the election results – and a White House lawyer even advised Eastman to back down from his antics and hire a criminal defense attorney.
Now that the committee has generated sufficient public interest in going after Ginni Thomas, it’s doing precisely that. Axios is reporting today that the committee is now formally seeking Thomas’ testimony.
It’s not clear if Thomas will comply. At this point it’s likely that the DOJ is looking at her, or will look at her, as a result of her emails with presumptive DOJ target Eastman. If Thomas testifies to the committee, she’ll risk further incriminating herself, and the DOJ will be able to use it against her.
If Thomas doesn’t want to testify, she could probably drag out a lengthy court battle fighting against any subpoena. She’d argue that her status as a Supreme Court spouse gives her some kind of immunity, which is a bogus argument that would fail, but it might allow her to go twelve rounds in court before losing.
But given that Ginni Thomas is an unhinged nutjob, she could decide to testify voluntarily, under the mistaken belief that her rambling conspiracy theories will vindicate her.
Either way, it’s now clear that the January 6th Committee will be emphasizing Ginni Thomas’ role in all of this at some point during these public hearings, whether she shows up as a witness or not. If anything, her refusal to testify, combined with the evidence that will be presented against her, might make her look even more suspicious.
