Someone asked if I think we’ll win the midterms. Two recent polls have the Democrats five points ahead of the Republicans in the generic midterm ballot, so it’s clearly realistic for the Democrats to win. But factors like gerrymandering and voter suppression can chip away at a five point lead, so the midterms have the potential to end up being very close.

Close races always come down to whether the political activists out there – meaning those of you reading this right now – are going to put in the work required to win: donating, volunteering, phone banking, using social media to amplify Democratic Party messaging, and focusing on actually winnable races.

Put another way: new polling shows that 44% of Republicans say we must accept mass shootings as a part of free society. We can lament about this, and bash them for it, and give up the gun reform fight, and lose. Or we can acknowledge that 44% of Republicans is about 10% of all Americans, realize we have the vast majority on this issue, and fight to win it.

Half the battle always comes down to realizing that you can in fact win, and that the people yelling “we’re gonna lose no matter what” are only ever trying to go viral and boost their own profiles at the expense of their own side’s viability. Of course we can win the midterms if we fight and put in the work. Go here to find out how.
