Madison Cawthorn’s empty coffers exposed
I often write about hubris. And it appears today I shall once again be so doing. This is because a certain Congressman has just come face to face with his own hubris — and it’s left him in rather a bad spot, to put it mildly. The Congressman I refer to is Madison Cawthorn. And he is in trouble.
I think it’s safe to say Cawthorn is having a difficult time. And this is reflected in his campaign finance filing. The coffers are empty. As you are aware, fundraising and politics go hand in hand. Most politicians fundraise, and Cawthorn is no different in that regard.
“Cawthorn Triumph” is the name of Cawthorn’s fundraising account. Only I think the name should be replaced with “Cawthorn’s shame.” The filing for Cawthorn’s fundraising shows — zilch. Not one shiny green dollar bill. This is for the first three months of the year. He didn’t raise a penny. Triumph?
Then we arrive at the second filing. This is “Making A difference in service to our nation.” It’s the name of Cawthorn’s leadership PAC. It has reported donations of a total of — $2,000.
This is not good news for Cawthorn. He has become a pariah in his own party. He has become a joke. And he has nobody to blame but hubris. I imagine Cawthorn has always been more of a follower than a leader. And that might be why he threw himself into the role of troublemaker. It’s a lot easier to cause trouble than actually do the hard work of coming through for one’s constituents.
And then there is the pendulum which I also often write about. Some of these politicians often think they’re immortal — that nothing can touch them.
They forget about the pendulum — which has been around for much longer than any one of them — and which always has the power to swing away from them.
But often lost in their own publicity, drunk on hubris and self-love, they forget. And now, for Cawthorn, he stares into the empty coffers as the flock abandons him. There is a very good chance Cawthorn won’t be reelected. Nothing’s guaranteed, but it wouldn’t surprise me. It wouldn’t surprise me at all.
