What’s it like to become “fixated” on something? Fixated can often mean obsessed. Now, occasionally that’s a good thing. For example, I became fixated on activism many years ago. I started to phone banks for candidates. I used my “fixation” for the greater good.

Believe it or not, everyone develops a fixation at some point in their lives. Sometimes it is a healthy one — like reading or writing or activism. Other times — well — other times the fixation is unhealthy. It can be too many sweets, drugs, alcohol, or murder. And war.

And murder and war are Putin’s middle names. Like the mythical sphinx demanding answer to a riddle, Putin is demanding results from his attack on Ukraine. Only the answers he is getting are not what the murderous dictator wants. Putin is not winning this war that he alone started. This is quite obvious. And he is fixated.

Former CNN Moscow Bureau Chief Jill Daugherty said this word herself during a segment on CNN. “This is almost going back to Stalin,” Daugherty said, adding that Putin displayed much the same fixation with Chechnya. Daughtery believes not only is Putin fixated but that he “really believes that the west is out to get him.”

Putin’s fixation is an exercise in futility, and the more obsessed and delusional he becomes, the more it is a sign that things are not going according to his wretched plan. Putin has also started threatening his own people, calling some “traitors and scum.” It is clear that he is losing this war — his own war. The question is — how much damage will he do in the meantime?
