These Trump-backed midterm candidates are struggling badly
Hopefully, former Senator David Perdue’s pathetic run for Governor of Georgia is revealing something about having Donald Trump’s backing. According to Associated Press, Perdue is having a little trouble raising money for his campaign. Herschel Walker is barely leading Senator Raphael Warnock in the polls and trails far behind him in the bank account. This may not be the case in other locales, but Georgia candidates apparently need more than Donald Trump’s backing.
Perdue had no trouble raising money for his senatorial campaigns to the tune of millions. According to AP, Perdue’s top 30 individual donors poured $450,000 into his senate campaigns, but the same group of people have given only $26,200 to date to Perdue’s gubernatorial campaign. These same backers appear to have decided to back Kemp instead. They have donated over $80,000 to Kemp’s campaign. Perdue is struggling to keep up with Kemp, both financially and in the polls. The primary is slated for May 24, so Purdue still has time to back out and save face. This could end up being downright embarrassing for him and Trump, which would be good news for the faction of the Republican party that would like to be rid of Trump.
Perdue has taken in roughly $1 million since he announced, but he is now down to less than $1 million cash on hand. Kemp, on the other hand, raised $7.4 million by the end of January and has $12.7 million on hand. It’s not even close when you look at their accounts. AP reported that Kemp has already spent $4.2 million on television ads. What is Perdue doing about it? He’s crawling to Trump on his hands and knees, heading to Mar-a-Lago where $3,000 is required to attend, and contributors must shell out $24,200 for a photo with Trump. Most people would not pay $.24 for that photo op, let alone over $24,000, but there are, unfortunately, fools with money who may well do just that. The question, however, will be whether Perdue ever even sees any of that money, as Trump is well known for his money scams.
Trump has plans for a rally in Northeast Georgia sometime this month, featuring Perdue and Walker. It would be wonderful if they fail to raise additional funds for these two, neither of whom should be running at all. Both are only running because Trump agreed to back them, and both campaigns are jokes. Perdue could not win back a senate seat he had held for eight years, yet he thinks he can become governor of a state he very rarely visited during those eight years. Perdue’s spokesperson, Jenni Sweat, told AP: “We’ll be outraised and outspent, but we won’t be outworked.” For what that’s worth. Perdue has a lot of work ahead of him if he is going to beat Kemp. Sweat went on to claim that Perdue’s campaign is “a people versus politicians race.” That is rich from one who rarely if ever showed his face in the state while holding office. Hopefully, both Perdue and Walker will lose and can join Trump in the “losers” category.
