“Mazars has flipped” on Donald Trump
When accounting firm Mazars informed the Trump Organization that Donald Trump’s past decade of financial statements could no longer be considered reliable, and that it was dumping the Trump Organization as a client due to a conflict of interest, the key part of the story was that New York Attorney General Letitia James almost instantly knew about it. This told us that Mazars gave a copy of the letter to James, which we took to mean that Mazars is in fact cooperating with James.
It turns out we’re not the only ones who see it this way. During his MSNBC show on Wednesday night, Lawrence O’Donnell announced that in his view and in the view of his panelists, “Mazars has flipped” on Donald Trump.
Here’s why this is such a big deal. When Letitia James filed the Mazars letter in court this week, she did so as part of her civil case into the Trump Organization. But James and the Manhattan District Attorney jointly have a related criminal investigation into Donald Trump. Recent reporting coming out of that criminal probe has focused on the Trump family falsifying asset valuations for tax, insurance, and loan purposes, all of which would be felonies. So Mazars flipping on Trump doesn’t just mean that Trump’s assets are in jeopardy. It all but cements that he’s going to prison.
