What it really means that Rudy Giuliani is now fully cooperating with January 6th Committee

Days after the news surfaced that Rudy Giuliani was in talks to cooperate with the January 6th Committee, the committee now says that Giuliani is indeed fully cooperating. This kind of thing never comes down to whether someone like Giuliani has become “good” or is still “bad” or can be “trusted.” It only ever comes down to whether Giuliani now believes he has to selfishly give up Donald Trump in order to keep himself out of prison. There are two ways this can play out.

The first and most cynical scenario is that Giuliani is playing games. But keep in mind that the January 6th Committee has dealt with clowns like this before. For the committee to be willing to even so much as say that Giuliani is fully cooperating, he must have already turned over some crucial evidence against Trump โ€“ the kind he can’t take back. So even if Giuliani flakes out from here, the committee will get to ring him up for contempt (or perjury) while also getting to move forward with whatever evidence he’s already provided. This would be a mixed victory for the committee โ€“ and keep in mind that it’s the worst case scenario.

The second scenario would be that Giuliani is cooperating with the January 6th Committee because he’s already decided that he’s going to end up having to cut a deal with the DOJ, or he’s already cut a deal with the DOJ. If Rudy’s brain is even half functional at this point, this would be his best move. He recently lost a protracted court battle to keep the DOJ from using the communications it seized when it raided his home, meaning Rudy is all but definitely going to be indicted for taking dirty foreign money โ€“ and that’s even before getting to the question of whether he’ll also be indicted for January 6th and election tampering. Rudy is nearly a lock for prison, and his only way out would be to give up Donald Trump and Trump world to the DOJ in exchange for immunity or leniency.

So the worst case scenario from here is that Rudy Giuliani has given the January 6th Committee at least some valuable evidence against Trump, and that Giuliani will flake out and still end up going down for contempt (and other more serious charges). The best case scenario is that Giuliani will give the January 6th Committee everything, because he’s also planning to give (or already has given) the DOJ everything.

In other words, this is either a minor victory for the good guys, or a massive victory. There’s no scenario where this turns into a loss for the January 6th Committee. There’s no scenario where Rudy Giuliani pulls a fast one and somehow magically gets away with it all. The only remaining question about this victory is whether it’s a major one or a minor one.
