The “charm” of Donald Trump is wearing thin with some Republicans. Chris Christie is obviously tired of him. During a recent visit to This Week, Christie pushed back on Trump’s claims that Mike Pence had authority to change the results of the 2020 election and mocked Trump, saying that Trump finally admitted that he lost the election. Think about it: The only way the election could be “overturned” is if the vote was correct. In essence, then, Trump finally admitted that he lost, which Christie called “telling the truth by accident.” His most damning words for Trump were that he incited the January 6 insurrection. Well, duh, we all knew that, but it is nice to hear Republican admitting it. According to the New York Times, Christie is not the only Republican tiring of Trump’s antics. Mitch McConnell, denouncing the RNC resolution, called January 6 “a violent insurrection.”

Granted, McConnell and Christie have their own ulterior motives for denouncing Trump, but McConnell remains a powerful figure in the Republican party. Despite Trump’s attempts to downgrade him, McConnell’s words carry a lot of weight with other Republicans. The more that he speaks out against the ridiculous actions of Trump and the RNC, the better the chance of getting through to others who hang on Trump’s every word. McConnell pointed out that he and others “saw it happen. It was a violent insurrection for the purpose of trying to prevent the peaceful transfer of power after a legitimately certified election, from one administration to the next. That’s what it was.” That is exactly what it was, regardless of how Trump, his enablers, or the RNC choose to see it. They are seeing something that obviously no one else can see. McConnell seems tired of the nonsense, but he is not the only one.

Mitt Romney took to Twitter to call the RNC resolution a “shame” on the party simply because Cheney and Kinzinger seek the truth. Another Twitter user reminded us that Romney understands because he was chastised by the party for contradicting Trump. Trump is not God. Indeed, he better resembles God’s counterpart Satan. Plenty of Twitter users urged Romney to do more than just tweet. That is the biggest problem with Republicans, even those who now oppose Trump. They do nothing to help anything else that needs to be righted in the world, like standing up for voting rights and advocating fairness. But denouncing Trump is a step in the right direction.

McConnell pointed out that it is not the role of the RNC to single out party members who have different viewpoints. In the past, the RNC would likely have agreed, but that was before the introduction of Donald Trump. Why they are so enamored of him remains a mystery. He is a liar and a thief, a professional grifter who has spent him entire life making money off others and pocketing money that he owes to people who have done work for him. Until people can remove their blinders and see Trump for what he is, we will continue to be plagued by his dark, useless presence.
