Masquerades often carry mystery with them tightly. Many masquerades involve costumes. They can often involve glittering disguises where one does not know the person behind the festival of masks. Masquerades can sometimes also involve wearing a mental mask — in other words, pretending to be someone you are most definitely not.

And recently both disguises took center stage in a pathetic display of pure embarrassment. The masked singer is a television show, a singing competition. The competitors not only sing, but they also appear in intricate costumes, and they appear masked.

Who knows whose eyes lurk behind the mask? And this week, on an episode set to air next month all hell broke loose. And by the end of the show, two of the contest’s judges had walked off the stage in protest of one of the contestants.

This aroma of shame began when one of the performers was unmasked. Who was it? Was it to quote the great Queensryche, “the eyes of a stranger?” Nope — it was American freak and insurrection supporter Rudolph Guiliani. I suppose in the era in which we now live; one shouldn’t be THAT surprised.

They were, though. And two of the judges were not only stunned but sort of grossed out. So they promptly left. Good show! Not. The judges who left are Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke.

This particular show is known for being outrageous, but that’s not the point. We can’t normalize these people. They’re freaks and clowns, and mask or no mask, the stench of their deceit cannot be hidden.

Reportedly this episode is set to air next month. And it’s on Fox, so no surprise. I don’t plan to watch it. I wish this country were not so reality-TV driven. But until the audience for this junk-TV fades, we may well see more of this.
