Matt Gaetz is having the worst week ever – and it’s about to get a lot worse

Once it was reported that Matt Gaetz’s former associate Joel Greenberg and Gaetz’s former girlfriend were both cooperating with the DOJ in the federal criminal case against him, Gaetz’s prospects became rather bleak. Cooperating inside witnesses usually lead to indictment and conviction. Gaetz’s best remaining hope would be if one or both of these witnesses fell through.

But this week Gaetz took a proverbial one-two punch. First it was announced that Greenberg’s long-delayed sentencing hearing had finally been scheduled, meaning he’s now satisfied that he’s going to get a reduced sentence in exchange for his cooperation. Then it was reported yesterday that Gaetz’s ex-girlfriend, who testified against him to the grand jury last week, has indeed been granted immunity – meaning prosecutors were fully satisfied with her testimony.

In other words, Gaetz is now almost 100% certain to be criminally indicted (and likely rather soon unless prosecutors have any additional witnesses to put in front of the grand jury). It also means that Gaetz will have a real challenge trying to get acquitted at trial, given that both these witnesses will surely testify against him in front of the trial jury.

And so Matt Gaetz is having the worst week ever. Yet it’s about to get even worse for him, with his indictment and arrest now on the near horizon. Gaetz responded to the news by announcing on Twitter that he’s canceling his membership in an exclusive Washington DC political club due to its COVID vaccine mandate, suggesting he’s not exactly taking his situation seriously. Then again, if he goes to prison, he won’t need the club membership anyway.
