Kevin McCarthy frantically flip flops as January 6th Committee moves in on him

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

This week the January 6th Committee formally informed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy that it wanted his cooperation in its probe. This came even as the number two House Democrat, Steny Hoyer, announced his view that any House Republicans who don’t cooperate should end up referred for criminal prosecution. McCarthy then announced that he won’t cooperate. This set the stage to where McCarthy is now on a fairly clear path to prison, as remarkable as that sounds. Now McCarthy is getting rather frantic.

Days after the January 6th Capitol attack, Kevin McCarthy stated that Donald Trump was at least partly responsible for the attack, and called for an investigative commission into the attack. But now McCarthy is suddenly flip flopping and says he doesn’t recall having said any such thing.

Yeah right, nice try. Kevin McCarthy knows that he’s in a no-win situation. If he cooperates with the January 6th Committee it’ll damage or end his political career as Donald Trump seeks revenge against him. But if McCarthy doesn’t cooperate, he’ll likely end up standing criminal trial for contempt.

McCarthy also surely knows that his earlier words, blaming Donald Trump for the Capitol attack, will be used as part of the legal basis for why his testimony is crucial and why the inevitable criminal referral against him should result in prosecution. No wonder McCarthy is flip flopping. When you have no good options, you often end up vacillating between the bad options you have.
