Lunatics!
Anti-vaxxers are a special breed. It is one thing to not care if you get sick and die, but it is a whole other issue when you fail to care about infecting others. Yet, we are surrounded by people who feel this way. Fortunately, companies like American Airlines and Southwest Airlines are helping in the fight by defying Governor Greg Abbott’s ban. As Huffington Post reported, they have mandated vaccines for their employees.
After President Joe Biden issued a federal requirement that all companies with 100 or more employees mandate vaccines, irresponsible governors like Abbott immediately issued executive orders banning the requirement. A spokesperson for Southwest Airlines told Politico: “Federal action supersedes any state mandate or law, and we would be expected to comply with the President’s Order to remain compliant as a federal contractor.” Similarly, American Airlines told the Hill that while it is reviewing Abbott’s order, “the federal vaccine mandate supersedes any conflicting state law, and this does not change anything.”
The vaccine has proven safe, and why people—especially people like Abbott, who are able to influence people to take it—continue to fight against it is a mystery. Abbott is not alone in his ignorance. His Republican competitor, Allen West, is just as crazy. West was recently hospitalized for Covid along with his wife, who is vaccinated and was almost immediately released according to Associated Press. The doctors were concerned about his oxygen levels, and even as he struggled to breathe, he took what little energy he had to tweet that he would “vehemently crush anyone forcing vaccine mandates” in Texas. What is wrong with these people? He is not even concerned that he infected his own wife, so you know he cares nothing about infecting the rest of us. Again, these people are certainly free to get sick and die, but they have no right to inflict their “freedoms” on the rest of us. West is already showing that, if elected, he will be as bad as if not worse than Abbott. He is not, however, the absolute worst. That award belongs to Jim Jordan.
The thing about Jordan is that he is not only hateful, but he is stupid. He is a lot like Trump’s son Don Jr. who frequently tweets without thinking. Jordan tweeted yesterday that “Ohio should ban all vaccine mandates.” Like Don Jr., people were waiting to pile on. Democrat Eric Swalwell responded: “Ohio should mandate sexual assault reporting for coaches.” Ouch. Jordan is but one in a long line of Republicans who are against vaccine mandates, even though those mandates would help to return us to some semblance of normalcy. It is interesting how they have forgotten that children had to be vaccinated against other diseases to attend school, and vaccines have saved many lives over the years.
This fight has nothing to do with vaccines. They just want to fight with Democrats at every turn and for any reason. While they continue their nonsensical fight, large companies in their states are requiring the vaccine despite them. Hopefully, their reckless, irresponsible behavior will be remembered when it is time to vote.
